In the 14th edition of Wacky Wednesday (2026), we break down the unique “Keep It Greasey,” performed by Frank Zappa.
Do you know what day it is? It is Wednesday, folks! Do you know what that means? Why, it is Wacky Wednesday! In the spirited column Wacky Wednesday, we analyze, break down, and explore songs from various musicians of various genres that can be considered unique, unusual, or ‘wacky.’ These songs can be new or old; the only requirement is that they ‘catch the ears’ because of their distinctiveness. With the background established, in the 14th edition of Wacky Wednesday (2026), we break down the unique “Keep It Greasey”, performed by Frank Zappa. Wacky Wednesday vibes commence!
Legendary guitarist and composer Frank Zappa (1940 – 1993) was one of one. That is an understatement for a musician who exemplified innovative spirit – pushing the envelope with his discography. His 1979 album, Joe’s Garage Acts I, II & III, was a rock opera that was originally released as two separate albums. The unusual song at hand, “Keep It Greasey”, appears as the second track on the second disc of the album. Some of its themes, as the title suggests, are NOT safe work. Zappa composed and produced the 8:20 song. Ike Willis (b. 1955) contributes the lead vocals.
“Keep It Greasey” is lengthy, running 8:20. While the sung portions of the record are complete three-and-a-quarter minutes in, an exhilarating, jazzy instrumental section extends the duration. Despite its length, “Greasey” is captivating. For example, metrically, the verses of the song are in 19/16 time… yes, you read correctly 😳. Credit drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (b. 1956) for keeping the time in such an advanced, asymmetric meter 😮💨. The record commences adventurously, with an electrifying groove and sickening instrumental riffs. The tone is set. Early on, the level of musicianship is sky-high. The chorus is the first section heard, emphasizing greasiness, with Willis portraying the character, Joe.
“Keep it greasy, so it’ll go down easy
Roll it over ‘n grease it down
I’ll drive you through the heart of town.”
Manx, also part of this rock opera, gets into the action in the italicized lyrics. Following a statement chorus, the first verse arrives. Willis masterfully delivers a tuneful melody, singing about the difficulty of finding good partners, etc. However, it’s the busy accompaniment, which sounds cacophonous, that is striking. Cue the asymmetric meter, and otherworldly musicianship… and quirkiness. The chorus returns, providing stability – it keeps it greasy, so it’ll go down easy, ya know. This quirky accompaniment, which sounds like every instrumentalist is doing whatever they’d like, individually, continues into the second verse. Joe, however, just keeps on doing his thing, referencing sex. The sex comes to life during the third verse, by far the wildest. From Willis’s perspective, she gets lubed up… for anal sex… “A girl don’t need no fancy grease / To get herself some rump release,” he sings, and adds, “Any kind of lube’ll do / Maybe from another part of you.” Holy shit! The lube ultimately used is “slobber from the side of your mouth,” with the result being “Here come that crazy screamin’ sound / Ah! Ah-ah, ah, oh no!” OH, NO, indeed 😳. The third verse is the most cinematic, dramatic, and distinct, from a vocal and instrumental perspective.
The final chorus is more dramatic than previous iterations, concluding with a slackened pace and ending with, dare I say, an unhappy ending (it is the devaluation of high-quality lube, for me)! From there, “Keep It Greasey” becomes an instrumental track. As many of the intricate, ornate riffs and music cues suggested, the outro is captivating. One of one, “Keep It Greasey” is something else. A record referencing heterosexual anal sex is crazy – that’s indisputable. But the creativity and musicianship are also indisputable. Frank Zappa was nothing short of a genius.
