“Lovedrug” provides an impressive snapshot of up-and-coming British singer/songwriter, Frank Hamilton.
There are few better ways to brighten one’s day than with music, sigh. Particular genres can fuel the fire for a fantastic day. Indie-pop is a prime example of music uplifting the spirit. British Singer/songwriter Frank Hamilton is an exceptional example of an indie-pop artist that lifts the spirits. His single “Lovedrug,” from his album, Songs to Make Life Slightly Less Awkward. Songs to Make Life Slightly Less Awkward arrived in late September.
“Lovedrug” possesses the qualities expected from an indie-pop song, namely bright, enthusiastic production work – driving synths as well as guitars. Unlike some indie-pop, “Lovedrug” isn’t over-produced. Here, Hamilton finds a sound balance, never allowing the synths to be too dizzying. Sound would be a perfect characterization for the timbre of the record itself.
Thematically, “Lovedrug” is about being infatuated. Hamilton makes this crystal clear on the infectious, memorable refrain:
“So pick me up / and drop me down / its four in the morning / this is all I think about / when I’m wide awake / when I’m fast asleep / See I’ve got this addiction to fiction, so come lie next to me.”
In the accompanying music video for the song, he takes it a step further, literally depicting a love drug. While new ground isn’t tread in regards the addictive nature of love, Hamilton does a superb job of conveying the emotions to an audience. In regards to his voice, he isn’t particularly flashy, but he doesn’t need to be. He packs more than sufficient oomph.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Lovedrug” proves to be a magnificent single for Frank Hamilton. This provides a snapshot artistically. For those who haven’t heard Songs, it entices you to do so. Clearly, Hamilton is an artist that deserves wider recognition. Perhaps this brilliant indie-pop joint about love, a hella relatable topic, will serve as a catalyst for Hamilton’s ascent.
