In the 119th edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Get Off” by Latin disco/funk band Foxy.
The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶! Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past. The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 119th edition of Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Get Off” performed by Foxy.
“Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooooh!” From the jump, Latin disco/funk band Foxy are turnt up to the nth degree on “Get Off”. Those oohs are classic on the fifth track from the collective’s 1978 album, fittingly titled Get Off. Cuban singer and guitarist Ish Ledesma and fellow Cuban singer Carl Driggs (d. 2017) wrote this unforgettable joint. As you’d expect, the innuendo is turnt up (we know what it means to get off). Foxy wasn’t innocent, but they could’ve done worse when it came to sex. Still, this was the late 1970s, so “Get Off” is risqué… sensual: “Pretty ladies are at our discretion / So we can get off / Peeking under the sheets with two lovelies / So we can get off.” Oh, snap! Their biggest of only two songs that charted on the pop charts, “Get Off” peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. It reached number one on the R&B songs chart, which is impressive. “Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooooh!”
So, what makes “Get Off” cook the way that it does? The music is utterly sublime. “Get Off” thrives on its scintillating riffs, with sickening playing from keyboards, bass, guitar, and drums. The rhythm section is locked in without a doubt. From the jump, there is high-level musicianship. That musicianship extends beyond the funky musical accompaniment to the equally funky vocals. Ish and Carl ate – they left no crumbs. “Lookin’ through that dress that drive me crazy and makes me get off / Sensuality excites my mind, it makes me get off.” Yep, that’s how it works! The vocals are dramatic, enthusiastic, and exaggerated. Adding to the colorful timbre are the vox effects and harmonies. Also, Foxy gets some female vocalists into the mix, further upping the ante. Over the top, the playful, tongue-in-cheek is a big part of the charm and reason that “Get Off” is so successful. Although both verses are intriguing, the pre-chorus and chorus take the cake. “Call me up at your place, I can love you crazy / In the heat you will understand,” the female vocalists sing in the pre-chorus, continuing, “Danger and excitement, that’s what makes a lady / Find out what she wants in a man.” Can you guess what happens in the chorus? “To get off, to get off, to get off”… you get the idea! “Get Off” remains a bop. Has sex ever sounded better or groovier on the track, like “Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooooh!”
