“Honestly, from the first moment his voice just seemed to fit very naturally with the beats I was producing, and there was never really any doubt after that.” If you haven’t heard of Flowstate yet, prepare to get to know them. Who you ask? Flowstate is a downtempo, electronic hip-hop duo, comprised of Hobday and tomdaddy, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Flowstate itself is defined as “cohesion between body and mind that allows any given task to be completed with minimal thought and effort; a state of being in which an individual flows towards its goal, like a river to a delta.” Psychological stuff by all means.  Something that instantly stands out about the single at hand, “That Shit Cray,” featuring Savannah, is the chemistry. That, as well as the aforementioned quote from Hobday, speaks to the magical, musical partnership between the two.

“That Shit Cray” opts for a longer run time, approaching the five-minute mark.  It’s actually better for bucking the trend of shorter, less developed records that dominate today. Flowstate establishes a vibe from the onset, one that’s moody and enigmatic.  The production is characterized by warm synths and anchoring drum programming.  Adding to the vibes are the calm, cool, and collected vocal contributions from Savannah, who sounds superb.  Adding more goodness are the low-key, easy-going rhymes that confirm and fit the downtempo hip-hop vibes.  Honestly, those rhymes further exemplify the song’s title – “That shit cray.” Adding the cherry on top, providing additional moodiness, is the use of saxophone.

Final Thoughts

Listening to “That Shit Cray,” it’s clear that the ‘vibe’ is central to the success.  By all means, does Flowstate achieve that vibe.  This is one of the most chill joints you’ll hear in 2019, yet it also packs a punch at the same time.  Hobday and tomdaddy make a formidable team, and Savannah only further accentuates.  Need some sick, chill, easy-going hip-hop in your life? “That Shit Cray” is where it’s at.
