3 out of 5 stars

After releasing multiple singles ahead of their third album, Dig Your Roots, Florida Georgia Line returns with its most ambitious single yet. “Life Is a Honeymoon” shows the eclectic nature of FGL, for better or for worse. This is apparent from the jump.

Clearly, “Life” is not country in the least – it’s reggae. Reggae was part of FGL’s script on “Sun Daze” off Anything Goes (2014) but, will this be played on country radio? “Life” is closer to being full-fledged reggae than country, which won’t win over traditionalists, arguably in either genre.

While “bro country” has been declared dead, if unofficially, there are still “bro” elements. Even so, the carefree nature of “Life” is a selling point. Lyrically, the boys take every chance they can to reference the good and happy life.

“Every time I look in your eyes / it’s like you take me back to the islands / you got me mile high cause you’re my little pilot…”

– Verse 1

Then, of course, there is the chorus:

“Life is a honeymoon, we’re gonna live it / let love keep us lifting, my dear / turn up a summer tune, we’re gonna kick it / get it sounding like Hendrix in here…”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Life Is a Honeymoon” is off-putting. To the single’s credit, there are definitely positive vibes worth noting (“See it’s a Monday through Friday, 365 celebration”). Obviously, it’s difficult to envision this appealing to traditional country music fans – it’s not traditional in the least. Although “Life” is odd, the track is interesting…
