O

n 3BOPS, we are totally dedicated to keeping things L-I-T-E! Similar to 5ive Songs, there’s a topic and a short blurb, only with THREE songs instead of FIVE.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  On the 65th edition of 3BOPS (2021), we select three awesome songs that are associated with the word FINISH in some form or fashion.

1. Elton John & Stevie Wonder, “Finish Line”

💿 The Lockdown Sessions • 🏷 Mercury • 📅 2021

Elton John, The Lockdown Sessions [📷: Mercury]Two highly decorated, iconic musicians – 🎙 Elton John and 🎙 Stevie Wonder – make sweet music together on the spirited, ear catching 🎵 “Finish Line”.  “Finish Line” appears on John’s 32nd studio album, 💿 The Lockdown Sessions.  John penned this compelling record with 🎼 ✍ 🎛 Andrew Wotman aka Watt (who also produces), 🎼✍ Ali Tamposi, and 🎼✍ Roman Campolo). The record commences with soulful keys – acoustic and electric – before a slick groove kicks in.  John ‘takes first blood,’ singing expressively with his full-bodied, mature vocals.  Following a fab verse, he delivers the centerpiece, the chorus, backed by gospel choir. As expected, the spirit is high, and the ears perked up with the throwback vibes.

The icing on the cake? The second verse performed by Wonder, who sounds as youthful as he did back in his heyday.  His marvelous tenor brings contrast, and helps to drive “Finish Line,” well, onward to the finish line.  He meshes well with John and choir on the chorus following his verse.  Amplifying the spirit and musicianship even more is his harmonica solo.  The finish line of “Finish Line” itself is eventful with John, Wonder, choir, and an unnamed soloist making all listeners want to witness – hallelujah!

2. Cattle Decapitation, “Finish Them”

💿 Death Atlas • 🏷 Metal Blade • 📅 2019

Cattle Decapitation, Death Atlas [📷: Metal Blade]“Burn, back from whence you came / Return to carbon once again / Now we see that the true evil has a face / Now we know the devil is the human race.” Well, shit, that’s troubling! Death/extreme metal band 🎙 Cattle Decapitation has a distinct, disturbing, and totally unforgettable name.  🎙 Travis Ryan and company back up their name with an intriguing brand of music that certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. After a four-year hiatus, the band returned in 2019 with their ninth studio album, 💿 Death Atlas which essentially expresses, frankly, how fucked-up mankind is.

On 🎵 “Finish Them,” the end is near, at least according to Ryan. “We purge with fire and we finish them,” he proclaims at one point, adding, “Deconstruct everything that’s built to last.” WE 👏 MUST 👏 DESTROY 👏 IT 👏, DAMMIT 👏! Also, worth noting on this fiery metal joint,

the listener is subject to references to, um, skull fucking:

“We fuck biology’s eye sockets
We skull fuck our futures for our profits.”

Charming Cattle Decapitation, charming.

3. Trippie Redd, “Finish Line”

💿 Trip at Knight • 🏷 1400 Entertainment / 10K Projects • 🗓 2021

Trippie Redd, Trip at Knight [📷: TenThousand Projects]“She stick her tongue out, look back, and spell R-U-N.”  Wow, 🎙 Trippie Redd 👉 👌! The melodic rapper trully does “run shit” on 🎵 “Finish Line,” which appears as the fourth track on his 2021 album, 💿 Trip at Knight. On the naughty, sexed-up chorus, he goes on to say, “She just wanna have fun, she’s so sick and tired of love.”

Trippie Redd makes it clear that his girl wants the pleasure just as much as he’s willing to give it.  He paints her as ‘easy,’ asserting, “She’s a sex addict fiend and she’ll even fuck the plug (that’s me),” adding, “I be racin’ to that pussy, bet I hit the finish line.” The filthy lyrics don’t stop there over the bright, enthusiastic production of 🎛 Hammad Beats and 🎛 RAFMADE. “Shawty looked me in my eyes and sucked the end of my gun” isn’t subtle. Furthermore, the vampire reference closing the verse has an erotic sensibility – there’s just something about those blood suckers (“Put my fangs in her neck, now she can’t feel the sun”)!
