Fetty Wap misses the mark on “Like a Star.” Not even Nicki Minaj or savvy production worker can elevate this dud.
Cutting straight to the chase, what will a sophomore album by Fetty Wap be like? The pop-rapper broke through in 2015 with hit album Fetty Wap, led by juggernauts like “Trap Queen” and “My Way.” So far, in 2016, he’s released a couple of singles, yet none of them possess the magic of “Trap Queen” or even the infectious, ridiculous “Jugg.” Unfortunately for the rapper, his collaboration with Nicki Minaj, “Like a Star” is by no means five-star worthy. Honestly, it struggles to attain three.
“Like a Star” initiates predictably. Predictably for Fetty Wap means he’s pop-rapping or quasi-singing – take your pick. Nonetheless, his verse is indecipherable. Ultimately, his performance is more sound than substance – all about swag and vibe. Give him credit for the vibe, which is amplified by bright, energetic production.
Nicki Minaj enters rather predictably herself, but is understandable. Her contributions are tough as albeit, once more finding her standing tall with the boys regardless whether she needs to or not. Lyrically, she doesn’t “move the needle,” but that’s a tall task in the context of this particular song.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, “Like a Star” falls flat as a pancake. Nothing propels this record forward, particularly Fetty Wap’s eye roll worthy babble. The best feature is the production, yet, it’s not enough to persuade most to spin this a second time.
