Fergie, Life Goes On © InterscopeFergie continues to try to find her footing after a 10-year hiatus. “Life Goes On” channels “Big Girls Don’t Cry.”

A long period of time elapsed between the release of a new single from Fergie. “M.I.L.F. $” earned some short-lived buzz upon its release, but faded.  It’s tough to comeback after a 10-year hiatus, let alone adding a gap between singles when trying to regain footing. Clearly, with singles here and there, speculation about a new Fergie album – potentially a surprise sophomore album – is justified.  Speculation aside, Fergie returns with “Life Goes On,” trading the raunchiness in favor of revisiting past success.  Overall, it’s not a bad look, though not earth shattering either.

“Life Goes On” opens with the same vibe as “Big Girls Don’t Cry” from 2006. It’s not a copycat, but it’s obvious what Fergie is going for initially.  The record Combines slick hip-hop drums and the bag of tricks with electro-infused pop.  Fergie delivers respectable vocals throughout, particularly on the chorus:

“Life goes on with or without you
It’s up to you what you’re gonna do
You could go or you could stay
Who cares anyway?
Life goes on with or without you
Damn it baby, what you’re gonna do?
You could go or you could stay
But who cares anyway?
(Haha yeah, who really cares?).”

The bridge contrasts the verse and refrain respectably:

“It’s time to take this out of my hands
Is it all gonna be worth it in the end?
Cause it’s safe here in my comfort zone
Never stray too far from home (yeah, yeah, yeah)
But then again this way I’ll never know, never know
Maybe I should go...”

Finally, the third verse is a rap verse.  Expectedly, it’s gimmicky and schmaltzy – typical of Fergie.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Life Goes On” has its moments.  Arguably, it’s better than “M.I.L.F. $” which as flat-out distasteful and sounded as if Fergie were trying hard to find her niche in pop music.  “Life Goes On” doesn’t come across a big-time potential hit, but does show that the artist has something to offer after such a lengthy hiatus.
