3.5 out of 5 stars

Father John Misty (aka J. Tillman) follows up his masterful LP I Love You, Honeybear with enjoyable, soulful single, “Real Love Baby.”

Father John Misty delivered an underappreciated masterpiece with 2015 album, I Love You, HoneybearHoneybear made Starpulse’s Best Albums of 2015, compiled by yours truly.  Now, Father John Misty, aka J. Tillman, returns with single, “Real Love Baby.”

“Real Love Baby” has an old school vibe through and through. This is very apparent on the chorus musically and lyrically:

“I want real love baby / ooh, don’t leave me waiting…”

As always, Tillman sounds terrific vocally. Furthermore, Love the vocal production surrounding his voice is superb. For the most part, “Real Love Baby” is pretty straightforward, particularly for Father John Misty.  That’s a blessing and a curse.  Still, “Real Love Baby” get one cool, intellectual musical moment at the end, when the two distinct sections of the song are played simultaneously.

Final Thoughts

While “Real Love Baby” isn’t quite as captivating as the majority of I Love You, Honeybear, it is sound a quite enjoyable. Well sung, and simply, but well written, it’s another rock-solid song from J. Tillman. It’s not transcendent, but respectable.
