Famous Dex, Pick It Up © 300 EntertainmentUp-and-coming rapper Famous Dex shines on “Pick It Up,” showcasing the utmost confidence and cockiness.  He gets a grand assist by A$AP Rocky.

Add Famous Dex to a huge crop of up-and-coming rappers.  Notably, Dex appeared recently on the A$AP Ferg commercial mixtape, Still Striving.  Here, on his new single “Pick It Up,” instead of rolling with A$AP Ferg, he rolls with another member of the A$AP Mob, A$AP Rocky.  The results are great.

One of the first things that stands out about “Pick It Up” is the sound and production.  The record oscillates between a soulful sample and an edgier, hard-hitting, unapologetic backdrop.  Dex raps during the ‘original’ production work, performing ad-libs during the gorgeous soul sample – an interlude section if you will.  His rhymes are agile and chocked full of confidence (and cockiness).

“Word around, word around, word around town / I head this boy was a clown / Swim in yo b*tch once I drown / Call up my plug for the pounds / Odd Future, yeah, it’s right on my clothes / Bad b*tch, yeah, I watch her do coke / Broke as hell, I used to sleep on the floor / I never do it no more, ooh.”

He takes the first two verses for himself, reserving the third and fourth verses for the ever-fierce A$AP Rocky.

“Order VLONE, color orange mango label / Rotary phone, in my old school Mercedes / Smoke OG grown, when I’m Californicating / I got three phones, business, conversation, and relation.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Famous Dex is onto something with “Pick It Up.” It’s short, but mighty sweet.  The rhymes aren’t transcendent by any means, but the MC definitely packs a punch.  A$AP Rocky, furthermore, gives Dex a lift.  Throw in great production work and oodles of personality, and “Pick It Up” feels good.
