Famous Dex, Japan © 300 EntertainmentWith the rap game saturated with much of the same, Famous Dex releases an enjoyable, though relatively indistinct single with “Japan.”

Rising rapper Famous Dex is nearing the release of his debut album.  After dropping a couple of singles, he returns with another new single, “Japan.” “Japan” commences with utterly ridiculous ad-libs – what’s new in rap music? Anyways, after he gets the silliness out of his system, he drops a simply magical hook.

“Baby girl, what you doing, where your mans? (where your)
I just popped a xan, fifty thousand in Japan (fifty thousand in Japan)
I ain’t doin’ no playin’, these red bottoms, not no Vans
And she tellin’ all her friends, I might put ‘em on the Gram, aye (yeah, Dexter).”

Okay, magical isn’t the right terminology.  After all, the hook encompasses Xans, red bottoms, and Instagram.  The verses don’t expand the depth much either.  On verse one, Dex raps about drugs (including marijuana) and sex.  On the second verse, he references fellatio (“Baby ate me like some cake…”) – charming.

Final Thoughts

Some other notes about “Japan.” Famous Dex keeps things short and sweet, as “Japan” runs just about two-and-a-half-minutes in duration.  With such brevity, it makes a lack of substance less of a deal-breaker.  The production is well-rounded, but the backdrop isn’t exactly game changing.  Ultimately, it’s an enjoyable record, but certainly not ‘the second coming.’ In order for Dex to truly make a name for himself, he’s going to have to go deeper or do something more unique than this.
