Following the disastrous “Young and Menace,” Fall Out Boy returns with a respectable single, “Champion,” redirecting the promo campaign for M A N I A.
Fall Out Boy shocked the world when they released single, “Young and Menace.” The problem was, the shock was bad shock, like FATALITY. Anyways, “Young and Menace” sounded like the punk-pop collective was going in the wrong way and didn’t build up positive buzz for M A N I A, arriving September 15. The good news, following the backlash, a new single finally arrives in “Champion.” No, “Champion” is not a god-save for Fall Out Boy. It is, however, much better than “Young and Menace” could ever hope to be. That said, it wouldn’t take much.
One reason why “Champion” is a better look for Fall Out Boy is that they aren’t overplaying their hand. Sometimes, the old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” should be applied. “Champion” doesn’t offer much in the innovation department, but it’s also inoffensive. “Young and Menace” was offensive because it sounded too far-fetched, not to mention poorly written. The concept of being a champion is cliché, but after a poor choice of single, what’s wrong with a cliché?
“Champion” has plenty of pros. The more understated approach to the vocals on the verse is thoughtful. Expectedly, Patrick Stump powers through his vocals on the chorus. We’d be disappointed if he didn’t. Speaking of the chorus, the lyrics are nothing flashy, but it’s definitely catchy:
“If I can live through this / If I can live through this / If I can live through this / I can do anything.”
The production is well-rounded, again, sporting doing nothing too crazy. The focus on guitars more than synths bodes well for Fall Out Boy. There’s still a pop element, but there’s more of the punk-pop vibe here compared to “Young and Menace.”
Final Thoughts
With pros come cons. As far as lyricism, does “Champion” really pack a punch? Nah. It’s okay, but nothing different. Yes, Fall Out Boy needed more of a safe single after a disaster, but, “Champion” won’t go down as the elite of their discography. Still, this is actually good. Not as good as chocolate cake, but enticing enough.
