Veteran R&B artist Faith Evans enlists new hubby and singer Stevie J on her romantic new single, “A Minute.” It’s imperfect, but respectable.
Faith Evans was ‘kind of a big deal’ back in the day – the 1990s. While she’s had some success in the 00s (such as 2005’s “Again” from The First Lady), her star hasn’t been quite as bright. That’s truly a bummer, but also consistent with a fair share of R&B artists, sigh. Still, commercial adversity hasn’t kept the gifted vocalist from recording and blessing us all with her awesome pipes. She returns with a new single, “A Minute,” featuring her husband, Stevie J. The results are mostly positive, though “A Minute” isn’t without flaw.
The sound of “A Minute” is old-school – this is ‘grown-folks’ R&B through and through. Old-school isn’t ‘vintage’ in this context – more like 90s adult contemporary R&B where Faith Evans was in her prime. There are some great musical cues, including the rhythmic synths that appear throughout. Even with some nice musical cues and ideas, the production feels a bit on the ‘cheap’ side – no offense and no shade… In regards to singing, Evans and Stevie J bring the heat, particularly Evans. They exhibit great chemistry together and hopefully the same can be said of their recent marriage – I’ll leave it at that. The rhythmic melodic lines are awesome on the second verse btw.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, there are some great happenings that occur on “A Minute.” Still, this grown-and-sexy R&B joint falls short of that ‘next-level’ finesse. It’s an enjoyable enough song that’s definitely respectable, but there’s just something missing to make it truly excellent or extra special.
