âExperience the Events That are Going Down Tonightâ features music by August Alsina, Enrique Iglesias, Kesha, Palaye Royale & Whitney Houston.
âI will feel a glow just thinking of you / And the way you look tonight.â đ Can you go wrong with Olâ Blue Eyes, aka Frank Sinatra. âThe Way You Look Tonightâ is traditional standard, one that the nine-time Grammy winner was renowned for. I use this lyric and oft-covered song to introduce the 13-song playlist, EXPERIENCE THE EVENTS THAT ARE GOING DOWN TONIGHT. EXPERIENCE THE EVENTS THAT ARE GOING DOWN TONIGHT actually began as Tonight⌠5ive Songs No. 8, before expanding from a mere five songs to 13.
Honestly, there are far more than 13 songs that feature âtonightâ in their title, so, it was difficult limiting things given all the possibilities. But for the sake of accessibility, there are only 13 songs including contributions from August Alsina, Enrique Iglesias, Kesha, Palaye Royale, and Whitney Houston among many others. Without further ado, prepare to experience whatâs going down tonight!
1. Enrique Iglesias, âTonight (Iâm Fuckinâ You)â
Ft. Ludacris & DJ Frank E
Greatest Hits ⢠UMG Recordings, Inc. ⢠2019
âBut tonight, I’m fuckinâ you / Oh-oh, you know-oh, that tonight I’m fuckinâ you.â đđ Might as well commence the night off with a bang because thatâs sure what Enrique Iglesias has in store on âTonight (Iâm Fuckinâ You).â This is certainly the most overt single that comes to mind when analyzing the Spanish heartthrobâs illustrious career. Of course, more often than not, that mole he had removed, as well as his ridiculously good looks are what actually come to mind. đ¤Š
Anyways, if nothing else, âTonight (Iâm Fuckinâ You)â sure is a far cry from âHeroâ â heâs certainly in a different, sexier mindset. âNow rock your body, oh-oh / Damn, I like the way you move,â he sings on the first verse, finishing it off, âSo, give it to me, oh-oh-oh-oh / âCause I already know what you wanna do.â
Of course, for those who totally disapprove of f-bombs, the censored version of the song becomes âTonight (Iâm Lovinâ You)â. Thatâs appropriate, but definitely takes some of the âfuckâ out of it đ ⌠guess thatâs the point though. BORING! 𼹠đ Anyways, DJ Frank E crafts some great, danceable production work along with Jacob Luttrell and Carlos Paucer. As for Ludacris, well, heâs true to self as, âFrom the window to the wall, gotta give you my allâ and âI love the way you shake that ass / Turn around and let me see them pants.â đ
2. Kesha, âTonightâ
High Road ⢠Kemosabe ⢠2020
âTonightâs the best night of our lives / So, take me out tonight.â Thatâs a reasonable request, I suppose Kesha! Kesha kicks off High Road with âTonight,â a song that initially seems like itâs going to be a dramatic, powerhouse ballad. After performing the centerpiece, the chorus, in a slower tempo, âTonightâ grows quicker, more unapologetic with its profanity, and takes on more of a hip-hop sensibility.
âBitch, we going out tonight (Yeah, woo) / Bitch, we going out (Ayy) / B-b-b-bitch, we going out tonight (Hey, ayy) âŚâ Woo! Eventually, âTonightâ brings all of its parts together, embracing pop, hip-hop, and honestly, the âKe$haâ of old, who makes an official appearance further down the track list â I shit you not! If nothing else, she ensures High Road is thrilling from the jump. Even in her early 30s, Kesha still knows how to throw down! đş
3. Whitney Houston, âIâm Your Baby Tonightâ
I Will Always Love You: The Best of Whitney Houston ⢠RCA ⢠2012
âWhatever you want from me / Iâm giving you everything / Iâm your baby tonight.â âIâm Your Baby Tonightâ serves as the title track from Whitney Houstonâs 1990 album. Iâm Your Baby Tonight isnât as polished as Houstonâs 80s masterpieces but does yield winners like the song at hand and the brilliant ballad, âAll the Man That I Needâ, one of my all-time favorites, honestly. â¤ď¸ Here, rather than get a big ballad, Houston gives us groove and some serious sass with superb results.
âFrom the moment I saw you / I went outta my mind,â she sings on the first verse, continuing, âThough I never believed in love at first sight / But you got a magic, boy / That I just canât explain.â The sentiment is similar on the second verse, where his touch definitely made Whitney feel some type of way. The effect? Basically, sheâs so taken by this stud that sheâs willing to do pretty much any and everything. After all, âYouâve given me ecstasy / Youâre my fantasy / Iâm your baby tonight.âÂ
4. August Alsina, âTonightâ
The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy ⢠Shake the World / EMPIRE â˘Â 2020
âTonight,â the 16th track from The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy, is another one of the stronger moments from the lengthy third album by August Alsina. The Exclusives and Awaz Beatz provide Alsina with sleek production work, idiomatic of contemporary R&B and modern hip-hop. The beat bangs, Alsina continues to show off his amazing pipes, singing about a very relatable three-letter word â âYou ainât know you dealinâ with a freak, babe.â Sex and nighttime go together seamlessly, right? Right! đđ
August Alsina certainly proves heâs a freak throughout. Sure, a line like âYou can leave them heels đ on / Pull them panties over to the sideâ is a hip-hop/R&B clichĂŠ, but âGirl, letâs work it out / Take it outside on the balcony / Donât give a damn, let the neighbors seeâ â Wow! Of course, Alsina doesnât stop there as his sex drive is turned TF up as fantasy is sure to become reality in his hands.
5. Lady Gaga, âFun Tonightâ
Chromatica ⢠Interscope ⢠2020
After proclaiming herself to be a âFree Womanâ on Chromatica, Grammy-winner Lady Gaga manages to have âFun Tonight.â She asserts, âI feel like Iâm in a prison hell / Stick my hands through the steel bars and yell.â So, she actually is NOT having fun tonight, plagued by negativity despite the exuberant sound of the record, which is set in a major key.
âI canât see straight; I canât see me Thereâs too much hurt caught in between Wish I could be what I know I am This momentâs hijacked my plans.â
Ouch! âFun Tonightâ is a prime example of schadenfreude at its finest, period. âYou donât think Iâve pulled my weight,â she sings on the chorus, continuing, âMaybe itâs time for us to say goodbye.â Again, schadenfreude, and in this case, Lady Gaga actively contributes to it.
6. Elton John, âSomething About the Way You Look Tonightâ
Diamonds ⢠Universal Music â˘Â 2017
âAnd I canât explain / but itâs something about the way you look tonight / takes my breath away / itâs the feeling I get about you, deep inside.â âSomething About the Way You Look Tonightâ is an Elton John gem that arrives late in his career. Accompanying his number one single âCandle in the Windâ, released in memory of Princess Diana, the romantic âSomething About the Way You Look Tonightâ was the promo single for Johnâs 1997 album, The Big Picture. As usual, longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin gives John superb lyrics to bring to life.
âSomething About the Way You Look Tonightâ is a gospel-infused pop/rock number, perfectly suiting his artistic sensibilities. John has always possessed soul, and âSomething About the Way You Look Tonightâ showcases such. Throw in Taupinâs knack for lyrics, and the authenticity created here is stellar. Johnâs affection for his lover, at least within the context of the song, is quite apparent. He canât even âdescribeâ it.â¤ď¸
7. Chris Stapleton, âNobodyâs Lonely Tonightâ
From a Room: Volume 2 ⢠Mercury ⢠2017
âI know a way, canât go wrong / Nobody leads nobody on / Nobodyâs lonely tonight.â Chris Stapleton is a beast, period. The Grammy-winning country musician just totally gets it, keeping old-school, traditional country music alive and well. âNobodyâs Lonely Tonightâ appears on his second album of 2017, From a Room: Volume 2.
Stapleton slackens the pace on âNobodyâs Lonely Tonight,â showcasing the sheer beauty and expressiveness of his voice. Even though this is a ballad, he continues to exhibit power and incredible grit as he sings. Itâs the coarse moments of his vocal performance that arguably, impress the most. Itâs not all vocals though â thereâs plenty of time for the music to shine, including a compelling, smooth guitar solo. Of course, there are also the lyrics as well.
âWhatâs love but just some illusion we believe Whatâs love but just some confusion we donât need.â
âNobodyâs Lonely Tonightâ previously appeared on the playlist, 13 Captivating Songs About Being Alone or Lonely, published back in 2019.
8. Summer Walker, âTonightâ
Over It ⢠Interscope â˘Â 2019
On âTonightâ (Over It) Summer Walker exhibits finesse, singing beautifully against a lush, sound backdrop. âTonightâ is a sensually charged, definitely the perfect soundtrack to what goes down in the bedroom.
The question seems to be, is Walker references plain old sex or make up sex. âI just wanna get into something tonight,â she sings, continuing, âI just wanna make up for lost time.â Make up sex, perhaps? Weâll leave it at that.
9. The 1975, âTonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)â
Notes on a Conditional Form ⢠Interscope ⢠2020Â
On âTonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)â from 2020âs Notes on a Conditional Form â the fourth studio album by The 1975 â matters of the heart are full force, though you honestly donât need to look any further beyond the title. But, in case it wasnât clear, on the chorus, Matt Healy provides clarity: âAnd tonight, I wish I was your boy / (Run away from me, run away from me) / ⌠Tonight, I think I fucked it royally.â Crystal clearâŚ. Worth mentioning is the use of an unexpected The Temptations sample (âJust My Imagination (Running Away with Me)â). Itâs an interesting result to say the leastâŚ
10. Chelsea Cutler, âSad Tonightâ
How to Be Human ⢠CC Ventures LLC / Republic â˘Â 2020
âI tell myself that youâre gone / I donât wanna be right / If missing you is so wrong.â Sad. đ˘ Yep, Chelsea Cutler seems pretty âSad Tonightâ on the promo single from her 2020 debut studio album, How to Be Human.  The pain of the end of love is perceptive from the jump, and only continues to plague the pop artist. âOh yeah, I hate being so damn honest,â she sings on the refrain, continuing, âYou have my heart, but you donât even want it, no / You donât even want it.â
Much like Lady Gaga on âFun Tonightâ, itâs crystal clear that Chelsea Cutler is not having any fun. Sheâs willing to beat herself up, and even as her friends try to help her rebound, sheâs just not in that headspace. âCould pretend that Iâm fine,â she sings on the second verse, continuing, âBut I donât really know how.â Ultimately, in pity party mode, Chelsea asks us all, âSo let me be sad tonight, sad tonight, sad tonight / ⌠âCause it feels so right / Yeah, it feels so right.â At least, her pain is our listening pleasure on the opening How to Be Human gem, sigh.
11. Palaye Royale, âTonight is the Night I Dieâ
The Bastards â˘Â Sumerian ⢠2020
âTonight is the Night I Dieâ â what a morbid song title. The single appears as the fourth track off of The Bastards, the 2020 album by Las Vegas rock trio, Palaye Royale. Given song and album titles, itâs no surprise that this is an aggressive, dark, minor-key record. Take the first verse for example: âLonely, another day / Drowning, please save me / I am struggling in my own daydream.â Damn, thatâs damning isnât it? đ
The second verse is like unto it, while the pre-chorus serves up the heavenly âHear the angels singâ and the chorus confirms imminent death. Oh, and for good measure, the Bridge references the 23rd Psalm (âAs I walk through the valley of the shadow of deathâ). TONIGHT â definitely WONâT be lit in the hands of Palaye RoyaleâŚ
12. Panic! At the Disco, âLet’s Kill Tonightâ
Vices & Virtues ⢠Fueled by Ramen â˘Â 2011
âLetâs kill tonight, kill tonight / Show them all you’re not the ordinary type…â âLet’s Kill Tonightâ is arguably the best song from what might be the least renowned, more underrated Panic! At the Disco album. Sure, Pretty. Odd. was divisive, but Vices & Virtues feels almost forgotten within the discography. Regardless what you think of the album, the up tempo, second track is pretty rad.
âLetâs Kill Tonightâ was produced by Butch Walker and clearly has his fingerprints on it. Some of the sounds that make the record so compelling are the synths, pounding drums, and strings. The strings close out the record dramatically. Furthermore, background vocals at the end give off a mysterious air â MURDER! đĄď¸ 𩸠Of course, Brendon Urie is the star of stars 𤊠đŻ, sounding elite as always, further amplified by strong vocal production. The chorus is the centerpiece, obviously, but Urie âgets it inâ with the gem of a line, âMay your feet serve you well, and the rest be sent to Hell, where they always have belonged…â Hell yeah! đ
13. Eric Clapton, âWonderful Tonightâ
Slowhand ⢠Polydor â˘Â 1977
âAnd then she asks me, âDo I look all right?â / And I say, âYes, you look wonderful tonight.ââ âWonderful Tonightâ is the perfect way to cap off EXPERIENCE THE EVENTS THAT ARE GOING DOWN TONIGHT. This is a classic by the iconic Eric Clapton. Better yet, this is THE classic by Clapton, which is saying something considering the gems heâs released over the years.
What makes âWonderful Tonightâ so wonderful? The vocals are authentic, expressive, and incredibly nuanced â Clapton at his best. His guitar playing is incredibly warm and lush â beautiful, melodic lead lines. Â Also, add soulful organ, robust bass, and drums to the mix, and the production is filled out pretty sweetly. The final component? The lyrics, which are simple, yet incredibly effective and timeless.
âI feel wonderful because I see The love light in your eyes And the wonder of it all Is that you just donât realize how much I love you.â
