Ervin MunirErvin Munir Returns With “When I Think”

rvin Munir has been quietly building something real out of Norfolk, and this third studio album “When I Think” feels like the moment everything he has been working towards comes into focus.

Eleven tracks, no filler, and an emotional honesty running through the whole thing that is genuinely difficult to shake off once it gets hold of you. From the opening notes of “Lifeline” you get the sense that this is not an album interested in keeping you at arm’s length. Ervin writes like someone who has thought too hard about things at two in the morning and decided to be completely truthful about what he found there. The lyrics have that quality of a conversation you only have with yourself, and the fact that he is willing to share them openly is part of what makes this record work as well as it does.

The piano sits at the heart of a lot of what happens here, and it anchors the more delicate moments beautifully. But “When I Think” is not a record that stays in one place. The arrangements shift and move throughout, sliding from stripped back folk into something with a rockier edge when the song demands it. It never feels forced. It feels like a songwriter following the material wherever it needs to go rather than trying to fit everything into a comfortable shape.

Standout tracks come in several different forms. “Rainfall Memories” has a gentleness to it that lingers. “I Don’t Care” hits differently, with more weight behind it. “One Step Beyond” shows a side of Ervin that feels like it has been waiting for the right moment to step forward. Each one earns its place. The album closes with “Live And Learn” and by the time you get there, it feels exactly right.

The title track comes with an animated video, which is a good instinct. It is one of the most personal moments on the record and giving it a visual dimension makes sense. It is the kind of song that deserves that extra layer of attention.

There is something else to say about this album, and it cannot really be separated from the music itself. “When I Think” is dedicated to Aeron Z Jones, Ervin’s long-term producer and close friend, who passed away recently. Aeron shaped Ervin’s sound across his previous releases, and his influence is woven into this record in ways that feel deeply felt rather than simply acknowledged. The dedication is not a footnote. It is part of what the album is. You can feel the weight of that loss and the importance of that creative friendship in the way these songs have been put together, and it gives the whole thing an added layer of meaning that only deepens on repeated listens.

Making an album under those circumstances and making one this good takes real strength. “When I Think” does not ask for your sympathy. It asks for your attention. Give it that, and it will give you something back.
