In the 38th edition of Wacky Wednesday (2025), we break down the unique “SugarCrash!” performed by Canadian trans hyperpop musician, ElyOtto.
Do you know what day it is? It is Wednesday, folks! Do you know what that means? Why, it is Wacky Wednesday! In the spirited column Wacky Wednesday, we analyze, break down, and explore songs from various musicians of various genres that can be considered unique, unusual, or ‘wacky.’ These songs can be new or old; the only requirement is that they ‘catch the ears’ because of their distinctiveness. With the background established, in the 38th edition of Wacky Wednesday (2025), we break down the unique “SugarCrash!”, performed by ElyOtto. Wacky Wednesday vibes commence!
“I’m on a sugar crash, I ain’t got no fuckin’ cash / Maybe I should take a bath, cut my fuckin’ brain in half.” Oh, wow! Canadian transgender hyperpop musician ElyOtto (Elliott Platt) is assertive from the beginning of “SugarCrash!”. He continues singing in the chorus of this fun and quirky self-penned and self-produced hyperpop record, “I’m not lonely, just a bit tired of this fuckin’ shit / Nothin’ that I write can make me feel good.” Oh, snap!
When “SugarCrash!” arrived, ElyOtto was a teenager. This sub-one-and-a-half-minute track is Gen-Z music. The production sounds exuberant – who doesn’t love bright, vibrant synths?! Beyond the synths, the banging, pummeling drums excel. Also, equally important to the sound and vibe are the pitched-up vocals by ElyOtto. They sound even more potent as he drops profane, f-bomb-fueled lyrics. In the verse, he asserts, “Feelin’ shitty in my bed, didn’t take my fuckin’ meds / Hyperpop up in my ears, everything just disappears.” The angst! At least, he acknowledges, “Got the rest of my life to fuck around / Got the rest of my life to make sound.”
Notably, in 2021, a remix featuring Grammy-winning pop singer/songwriter Kim Petras and Curtis Waters (Abhinav Bastakoti) was released. In the remix, like ElyOtto, Petras asserts, “Feel fuckin’ crazy, I just wanna / Feel good.” As for Curtis Waters, he made himself the victim, is dealing with addiction (“Got me on these meds, they sayin’ I’m really sick”), and makes it clear, “I ain’t comin’ home.” As for ElyOtto, he adds in the outro, “I’m like a little kid in a sweet shop / Pretty packages, I can never make it stop / It’s like a nightmare, I can never live it down / So, all I really know how to do is make sound.” “SugarCrash!” in all versions is better heard than explained, honestly!
