Ellie Goulding drops the fourth track off of the EG.0 portion of her fourth studio album, Brightest Blue, “Slow Grenade” featuring Lauv.
After releasing numerous singles, Ellie Goulding announced the release of her fourth studio album, Brightest Blue. Brightest Blue was definitely a long time coming, arriving five years after Delirium. Worth noting about the new album, it’s divided into two uneven parts: The core Brightest Blue (13 tracks) and EG.0 (just five tracks). Interestingly, four out of six singles hail from EG.0 including “Slow Grenade” featuring Lauv.
“Help me, my God, this got messy / Least I got the best seat / ‘Cause we put on one hell of a show…” “Slow Grenade” is none too shabby overall. It features respectable production courtesy of Joe Kearns and OZGO that suits perfectly suits the Ellie Goulding style. It’s modern, sleek, etc. Goulding sounds as distinct, expressive, and lovely as usual, giving listeners a catchy chorus as she reflects on L-O-V-E:
“Slow grenade is blowing up My mistakes, so why don’t I Why don’t II stop it? Still got time for me to stop it...”
Given the fact that “Slow Grenade” dabbles in love, Lauv is a fitting collaborator, performing a couple of solo lines and duetting with Goulding on the second verse.
“Crazy, late nights in the city Drink until you hate me Then say that I should just let you go...”
From the time he enters until the end, they duet in some capacity (with some solo lines here and there). The results are solid – really no major complaints or glaring cons.
Final Thoughts
So, how does “Slow Grenade” stack up? Ultimately, it’s another solid Ellie Goulding track without feeling like a home run. There’s nothing extremely critical to say about it by any means. That said, I don’t leave “Slow Grenade” feeling deeply moved or necessarily sold on listening to it over and over. Not bad though, just doesn’t move the needle.
