Grammy-winning pop singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran drops another enjoyable single, “Shivers,” ahead of his anticipated LP, = (Equals).
A
ccording toFirst, “Shivers” features well-rounded production work (Sheeran, FRED, and
Steve Mac). Once again, like “Bad Habits,” “Shivers” gives Sheeran a bit more of a modern pop sound compared to the past. My favorite aspect of the production is the consistent groove from the start, as well as the chorus, which features some colorful music touches, including brass. Throughout the course of the record, Sheeran sounds clear and commanding, never fighting the production work. Like the excerpted lyrics, Sheeran sounds sincere and dedicated, as she gives him shivers considering he’s so in love. Besides how ear catching the chorus is from an instrumental perspective, it also marks the best and catchiest moment of the song:
“Ooh, I love it when you do it like that And when you're closer, give me the shivers Oh, baby, you wanna dance till the sunlight cracks And when they say the party’s over, then we'll bring it right back.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, Ed Sheeran delivers another enjoyable record with “Shivers.” I prefer “Shivers” to “Bad Habits”, though “Visiting Hours” remains the single to beat from = (Equals). “Shivers” doesn’t change the pop game, but it’s a respectable, well-rounded moment for Sheeran. He makes his point clear – he loves her!
