Grammy-winning pop singer/songwriter seeks to rid of “Bad Habits” on his highly anticipated comeback solo single.
Often, changes in the lives of musician are the catalyst for contrast in their music. For 🎙 Ed Sheeran, newfound fatherhood marks a catalyst for change in his music. For weeks, the 🏆 Grammy-winning musician’s new single, 🎵 “Bad Habits”, has been hyped up (available for pre-order on the iTunes store). Now that it’s arrived, listeners have a clear picture of what bad habits Sheeran seeks to rid of or has already rid of. Does “Bad Habits” live up to the hype? Read on and find out.
The strongest aspect of “Bad Habits” is songwriting. We expect this from Sheeran, one of the better writers in the industry. Throughout “Bad Habits,” he speaks of pure intentions, but those ‘best laid plans’ lead to problems which are unhealthy and at best, counterproductive.
“My bad habits lead to wide eyes starin’ at space And I know I'll lose control of the things that I say.”
This theme as well as the accompanying lyrics are relatable. We all have bad habits that usually don’t end up well. Working to curb them and get to a better place is the right thing to do. As far as singing, Sheeran performs well, though I wouldn’t characterize “Bad Habits” as his best or most rousing vocal. The production (Sheeran, 🎛 FRED, and 🎛 Johnny McDaid) and sound of the record is a change of pace, embracing a more dance-pop vibe. I’m not sold on this setting for Sheeran but it’s okay – a moderate success.
Final Thoughts 💭
Ultimately, while “Bad Habits” is respectable with a relatable message, though I’m not sure that it lives up to the hype. It’s good but I wouldn’t call it great. After listening a couple of times, it’s pleasant and totally inoffensive, even has a catchy chorus, but still, doesn’t feel like a masterpiece. Nonetheless, there’s enough here to earn Sheeran another hit single and build buzz for the forthcoming album. The music video is cool btw.
