L.A. alt-pop band Echosmith delivers an infectious, hot new single with “Over My Head.” Safe to say that the siblings, led by Sydney, are charged-up to the nth degree.
“There’s always static on TV in this hotel room
Reminds me of all the things you think I don’t understand…”
My oh my! Echosmith are a rising Los Angeles alt-pop band comprised of the Sierota siblings: Sydney, Noah, and Graham. To date, the collective has released one album (Talking Dreams, 2013) and an EP (Inside a Dream EP, 2017). The siblings are back with a compelling single, “Over My Head.”
Rhythmic production work follows repetition of the introductory titular lyrics: “Over my head, over my head, over my head.” Eventually, this serves as a key portion of the catchy chorus:
“Over my head, over my head, over my head
Over my head, over my head, over my head
Is it too late, too far gone to fix this
Over my head, over my head, over my head
Over my head, over my head.”
Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Keying in on the production, besides the rhythm itself, the sounds are quite alluring: a prominent bass line, keyboard ostinato, synths, and an old-school drum groove. That’s winning. Keeping the winning ways going, frontwoman Sydney drops feisty lead vocals. She depicts the plights of love – everything he says simply goes “over my head” and she’s totally over it.
“…It seems like you and me, we keep losing connection
Whenever you talk to me, it doesn’t make any sense…
You take the simplest thing and always complicate it
Talking in circles, got me dizzy like a merry go round…”
The bridge contrasts the verses and choruses. Perhaps what’s most notable is a brief change of feel.
Final Thoughts
Despite the fact that Sydney’s boo (or soon to be ex) is giving her a serious headache, her displeasure is our pleasure. How’s that for schadenfreude? “Over My Head” is incredibly catchy and superbly produced. From a first listen, it’s impossible to get the chorus out one’s head. That’s a good thing.
