Dustin Lynch, Current Mood © Broken BowDustin Lynch continues to shine on “Why We Call Each Other,” the fourth single from his highly anticipated third album, ‘Current Mood.’

For once when reviewing a Dustin Lynch single, I’ll refrain upon talking about how good the man looks in a cowboy hat.  We’ve been there, done that. Also, I won’t highlight how happy his Current Mood (September 8) should be because he potentially has a breakthrough on his hands.  Worth mentioning is that the three singles preceding “Why We Call Each Other,” were all winners.  He doesn’t drop the ball on his fourth.

Noticeably, “Why We Call Each Other” sounds different, at least initially, from the singles that precede it. Dustin Lynch sings in his lower register, and man, oh man, the cowboy’s on…fire.  This contrast adds a bit of mysteriousness, and eliminates predictability early on.  Additionally, “Why We Call Each Other” has a bit more of a modern vibe – the drums, and later, some synths!

Country fans shouldn’t be worried that Dustin Lynch has went to the dark side that is eclectic, contemporary country. “Why We Call Each Other” is still much more country than it’s not.  Vocally, Lynch stays true to the country idiom, additional synths or not. He even lets loose a bit as the song progresses, showcasing some “Small Town Boy” soul.  Also easing the shock of some synths are is banjo and a wall of guitar.  Totally country.

Final Thoughts

Earlier, it was asserted that Dustin Lynch doesn’t drop the ball on “Why We Call Each Other.” That’s true.  Arguably, single four isn’t quite as potent as singles one, two, and three, but Lynch shouldn’t let that ruin his Current Mood.  The cowboy should continue to ride high on “Why We Call Each Other” because it’s another enjoyable, well-rounded song.  It’s not game changing, but no reason for him to hang up that hat that he rocks so well.
