It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 51st edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2025), we dive into “Mercy”, the one-hit wonder by Duffy.

“Hit the beat and take it to the verse now / Yeah, yeah, yeah.”

For whatever reason, the retro-pop/soul musician became a one-hit wonder. Surprisingly, Duffy released just two albums: Rockferry (2008) and Endlessly (2010). The ace-in-the-hole was the former, a superb debut album led by her sole hit, “Mercy”. Duffy penned “Mercy” with producer Steve Booker.  The only song she charted on the pop charts, despite the gems that appeared on Rockferry, “Mercy” peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Fittingly, the song was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards.  While Duffy lost that award, as well as Best New Artist (both to Adele, by the way), she picked up her only Grammy to date with a win for Best Pop Vocal Album for Rockferry.

So, what made “Mercy” the cat’s meow back in 2008? Duffy served up a heaping dose of soul.  She sang authentically and sincerely, singing about falling in L-O-V-E.  “My morals got me on my knees,” she asserts in the first verse, and adds, “I’m begging, please / Stop playing games.” In the second verse, she questions his intentions: “Now you think that I / Will be something on the side / But you got to understand that I need a man / Who can take my hand, yes, I do.” In the pre-chorus, she is enticed – clearly under his spell.  By the centerpiece, the tuneful, unforgettable chorus, she admits her strong feelings for him:

“You got me begging you for mercy

Why won’t you release me?

You got me begging you for mercy

Why won’t you release me?

I said release me.”

Beyond strong songwriting and a remarkable, nuanced, and well-rounded vocal performance, “Mercy” thrives thanks to its vintage-sounding production.  This bop hearkens back to the pop and soul of old, making it sound refreshing in the late 2000s.  Neo- and retro-pop and soul had a moment back then, and Duffy and producer Steve Booker nailed it. Duffy should have earned more hits beyond “Mercy”, one of many superb songs from Rockferry.  But, if one is to only early one hit, this merciful gem is the one.  It is incredibly special.
