DRAM ft. Lil Yachty, "Broccoli" © #1EpicCheckLLC / EmpireRappers DRAM and Lil Yachty deliver a surefire hit with weed-loving, come-up, feel-good anthem, “Broccoli.”

DRAM and Lil Yachty are both up-and-coming rappers. DRAM (Does Real Ass Music) serves as the lead artist on hit single, “Broccoli.” Of course “Broccoli” has nothing to do with the vegetable – it’s a weed reference! While it took a while for “Broccoli” to take off, it is now a top-15 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Broccoli” is bright, set in a major key.  The sound is incredibly optimistic sound for a rap song.  True to its subject matter, it sounds “high.” Unsurprisingly, the production work is excellent from the ostinato piano to the banging beat. Lil Yachty raps the first verse.  He manages to deliver a particularly controversial line: “N*gga touch my gang we gon’ turn this shit to Columbine.” Despite the questionable reference to the school shooting, Yachty is on fire. His unique tone helps to make him a compelling MC.

DRAM delivers the hella catchy hook:

“In the middle of the party bitch get off me
In the cut I’m rolling up my broccoli
Ya I know your baby mama fond of me
All she want to do is smoke that broccoli
Whispered in my ear she trying to leave with me
Said that I can get that pussy easily
Said that I can hit that shit so greasily
I’m a dirty dog I did it sleazily.”

As good as the hook is, the post-hook/bridge is the selling point.  DRAM even references it in the intro of the record: “Ain’t no tellin what I’m finna be on / I’m beyond all that fuck shit…Sure, it’s explicit but definitely infectious.  He continues to kill it on the second verse, which is filled with clever references and punchlines.  One of the best:

“Couple summers later I got paper
I acquired taste for salmon on a bagel
With the capers on a square plate
At the restaurant with the why you got to stare face.”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Broccoli” is infectious from start to finish.  Exceptionally produced, soundly performed, and a clear-cut hit.
