3.5 out of 5 stars

Drake, I'm Upset © Cash MoneyThe “6God,” Drake, continues on an upward trajectory in 2018 with a surprise fourth single, the ‘emotional’ “I’m Upset.”

Drake has been on fire throughout the course of 2018.  Honestly, he hasn’t slowed down much since 2015, releasing numerous albums and mixtapes.  2018 has been great thanks to two no. 1 singles in “God’s Plan” and “Nice for What”.  Back once more, the seemingly unstoppable rapper/singer returns with “I’m Upset.” Does he retain the glory of the aforementioned singles, plus the underrated “Diplomatic Immunity”?

With Drake, you never know which persona you’re going to get.  In the case of “I’m Upset,” listeners get the tougher version, trading singing and pop-rap for straight, un-pitched rhymes. His toughness is among the selling points of “I’m Upset.”  He also drops a respectable hook (with variations) in the process.

“I’m upset

Fifty thousand on my head, it’s disrespect

So offended that I had to double check

I’ma always take the money over sex

That’s why they need me out the way

What you expect?”

Another selling point is the production.  Sure, it’s basically one idea looped over and over again, but it’s a good one – hard drums, production with a bite, matching the intensity of the rhymes, sigh. To recap, the pros of Drake’s being “upset” are his harder flow, the hook, and the backdrop.

Cons? Potentially some of his lyrics regarding women have the potential to be misinterpreted. The main objection occurs on the first verse when he spits, “Thankful for the women that I know / Can’t go fifty-fifty with no ho / Every month, I’m supposed to pay her bills / And get her what she want.” It depends on one’s ready on “fifty-fifty with no ho,” or even referring to a woman as a hoe in general.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “I’m Upset” is another enjoyable, solid single from Drake.  It DOES NOT supplant “God’s Plan” or “Nice for What,” but it sounds like going into Scorpion that the “6God” has stepped up his game from, say, Views.
