‘The 6 God,’ better known as Drake, returns strong with “God’s Plan,” an enjoyable promo single from his forthcoming EP, ‘Scary Hours.’
Toronto rapper-singer Drake never seems to disappear from the spotlight for long, at least in recent years. In 2017, he dropped a playlist-album, More Life, which had its share of memorable moments (“Free Smoke,” “Passion Fruit,” “Portland,” etc.). He’s back in 2018 with a new EP, Scary Hours, led by two contrasting singles “God’s Plan” and “Diplomatic Immunity.”
“God’s Plan” initiates with an enigmatic, major-key, driving rhythmic synth. Drake begins mumbling on the intro (“Yeah they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’…”). Eventually, the intro returns later, on the bridge. Drum programming enters in on the second half of a melodic first verse that is more singing as opposed to pop-rapping. The chorus ends up being more pop-rap oriented compared to the first verse. A bridge follows the chorus, incorporates the intro (as aforementioned) as well and some instrumental variations.
“Bad things It’s a lot of bad things That they wishin’ and wishin’ and wishin’…”
The second verse goes a bit harder than the first. The production digs in more as does Drake, with a more aggressive approach. A second chorus follows, then the bridge. The form is pretty straightforward, as is the record itself.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, “God’s Plan” proves to be an enjoyable record. It’s not necessarily game changing, but certainly well-conceived, well-performed, and well-produced. Worthwhile by all means.
