ring on the controversy, won’t you? Controversial Tunes 😈🎶 is a column that provides background information and insight into songs that raised eyebrows and totally stirred the pot.  The records that grace Controversial Tunes are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  On the 23rd edition of Controversial Tunes, we explore the controversy behind the song, 🎵 “Girls Want Girls” by 🎙 Drake featuring 🎙 Lil Baby.

Theme & Lyrics

These men are something else.  To clarify, these cis-hetero/straight men are something else.  Three songs into the long awaited 💿 Certified Lover Boy, 🏆 Grammy winning rapper/singer Drake ensures we get some controversy.  That controversy is the fetishization of lesbians… by straight men.  If you follow this column, you know I’ve previously criticized 🎙 Liam Payne for fetishizing bisexuality. Drizzy doesn’t get a pass. Exhibit A – the chorus:

“Yeah, say that you a lesbian, girl, me too
Ayy, girls want girls where I’m from
Wait, woah, yeah, girls want girls...”

So, he’s a lesbian? How the hell is that even possible?  PinkNews was all over this early on, highlighting the ‘bizarre’ and of course, problematic nature of the song.  The criticism, expectedly, was ripe AF.  Of course, Drake isn’t a lesbian but rather a straight guy who distastefully likens himself to a lesbian because he likes women too.  Ugh – disgusting and unnecessary! Of course, what better to drum up controversy than another straight guy fetishizing lesbianism/bisexuality. Ladies and gentlemen, presenting 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper, Lil Baby: “She like eating pussy, I’m like, ‘Me too’ /… Please bring your girlfriend along with you.” Yeah, saw that one ‘coming.’

Final Thoughts 💭

Rap music has long objectified women – nothing new.  References to ménage à trois is nothing new either.  In those ménage à trois, it’s always two women, of course.  Nowadays, these horny, distasteful, straight male rappers are even more self-serving, using female same-sex relationships to fulfill their inner freak.  That’s exactly what Drake and Lil Baby do on “Girls Want Girls.” Would these same guys promote lesbian relationships if there were nothing in it for them? Doubtful.  The answer becomes a resounding hell no when you examine the degree of homophobia rap has toward gay/queer male artists.  These straight rappers aren’t willing to champion that.  “Girls Want Girls,” ultimately, was a poor choice on Drake’s part.
