Drake sounds tried-and-true on “Fake Love,” a single from his upcoming album, ‘More Life’ expected in December.
The ever prolific Drake released two new singles. Did he really need to release anything new? No. Drake released a commercially available mixtape in 2015 with If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, as well as a studio album in 2016, Views. Nonetheless, he whets fans’ palettes with “Fake Love” and “Sneakin’,” two songs from upcoming project, More Life.
“Fake Love” is an enjoyable, respectable new offering from Drake. Ultimately, it is another example of the notion of “No New Friends.” This is a prominent topic for Drake, so it’s not ‘brand new’ in that regard. Besides tackling fakes, it is also a flex-fest for the Canadian musician, who is a superstar by all means. A lot of people want to be him, or at least associated with him because he’s famous. The hook sums up the sentiment of the entire song:
“I’ve been down so long it look like up to me / they look up to me / I got fake people showin’ fake love to me / straight up to my face, straight up to my face.”
Drake goes on to pop-rap/quasi-sing on the verses, specifically addressing females seemingly. The reason we know that he’s referencing ladies is because of the word “talkin’,” which signifies the process of becoming boyfriend/girlfriend. Furthermore, this is common for Drizzy, once again. He’s more general on the pre-hook and the aforementioned chorus, expanding his audience beyond who he’s bedded.
Beyond familiarity lyrically, the production is also standard fare for the rapper/singer. This is a pro as it suits him stylistically. It doesn’t add the element of unpredictability, but considering his status in the music biz right now, does he need to be unpredictable? The vibe is desirable by all means.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Fake Love” is Drake at his best. He doesn’t offer anything new or particularly groundbreaking, but he flexes soundly. The production is lush, playing to his emo, laid-back strengths as an artist. Overall, sound.
