Doja Cat, Balut [📷: Kemosabe / RCA]Grammy-winner Doja Cat continues to turn heads with “Balut,” the fourth single and 15th track from her fourth studio album, Scarlet.

“Remember this, girls / None of you can be first, but all of you can be next / Woo, woo.” Oh, 🤼‍♂️ Ric Flair! Notably, 🎵 “Balut”, the 15th track from 💿 Scarlet, commences with the Ric Flair sample, which reappears at the end. Before 🎙 Doja Cat raps one note on “Balut,” the tone is set, like, WOO! “Balut” separates itself from previous singles from the Scarlet cycle, with the sophisticated production (🎛 Yeti Beats and Rogét Chahayed). Hearkening back to jazz-rap and boom bap.  Even in the chorus, given the classy backdrop, Doja is kinder and gentler:

“Ah, uh, yeah, uh

Wow, uh, yeah, uh

Wow, uh, yeah,

It’s like takin’ candy from a baby.”

In the first, Doja spits, “Dishes on my ass, still I’m thicker than some oatmeal / Glass houses, I don’t really like to keep my stones there / Oh, well, I’ll buy another property for four mill’.”  Um, wow! Later, in the second verse, she asserts, “Copy this (Copy this), copy that (Copy that) / Every bitch that is her copycat / Copy the greats, that’s my number one strategy / But beware that you can’t copy stats.” Is 🎵 “Balut” the second coming of rap? No, of course not, but it marks another entertaining, worthwhile single from the 🏆 Grammy winner.  Also, it should be mentioned, she never mentions actual balut explicitly… it’s named balut because “it’s a metaphor for Twitter Stans and the death of Twitter toxicity”.
