3 out of 5 stars

“Turn Down for What” hit-maker DJ Snake returns with full-length debut Encore, with jam-packed instrumental single “Ocho Cinco” leading the charge.

After captivating the world with the spunky “Turn Down for What” back in 2013, DJ Snake has finished his debut album, Encore.  Leading the charge for Encore is single, “Ocho Cinco,” featuring Yellow Claw.  Mostly instrumental, “Ocho Cinco” relies on its production work as its propelling force.  Is it successful?

“Ocho Cinco” features an intense dance beat from the jump.  The beat grows more intense before stopping. The beat is eventually replaced by synth before the hard, commanding beat returns.  Beyond its many instrumental tricks, the sole vocal line by Yellow Claw stands out:

“DJ Snake and Yellow Motherf*cking Claw /O-O-O-Ocho Cinco.”

That’s about the size of it.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Ocho Cinco” has lots of different ideas to take in. Arguably, it’s too crammed. Regardless of nitpicking, Snake’s sick synths ooze with juice.  Even though it’s 95% instrumental, it’s enjoyable. “Ocho Cinco” isn’t earth-shattering, but successful.
