Grammy-winner DJ Khaled taps Grammy-winner Drake for āPOPSTAR,ā a formulaic, lukewarm trap banger at best.
DJ Khaled is back ā did he ever really go away though? On cue, a new album is on the horizon (Khaled Khaled), and āWE THE BESTā has called upon Drake for not just one but TWO singles.Ā The two singles are āGREECEā and āPOPSTAR.ā Weāll pick apart ā err ā examine the latter here! Letās just say, the bar isnāt particularly high when it comes to either artist as of late. No shade, just factsā¦
āPOPSTARā is a banger, at least by design. Itās certainly built upon a formula to say the least.Ā Pretty much, this is your āby the book,ā bravado-heavy trap joint.Ā The production by Khaled, OZ, and David & Eli is sound, just as weād expect.Ā Is it game changing? No, but it gets the job done.Ā Focusing on the star, Drake, well, heās locked-in to high flex mode, which is clear when the chorus drops right after the brief intro:
āBitches callinā my phone like Iām locked up, nonstop From the plane to the fuckinā helicopter, yeah Cops pullinā up like Iām givinā drugs out, nah, nah Iām a pop star, not a doctor.ā
Deep stuff ā says no one! Even so, Iād argue this is one of the selling points of āPOPSTAR,ā even if it lacks profundity.Ā At least Drake is edgier than what we usually see. Beyond the chorus, things donāt get any deeper as Drake spends his time flexing about his tough, swagger-laden āpop star statusā which includes any girl he wants, anything he wants ā etc., etc., etc.!
Final ThoughtsĀ
If you enjoy a basic, non-transcendent trap banger, then youāll probably be onboard with this DJ Khaled/Drake collaboration.Ā As temporary dessert, itās successful.Ā The question is, will we be talking about how lit āPOPSTARā is years from now? Doubtful.
