Diplo & Jonas Brothers, "Lonely" [Photo Credit: Columbia]Grammy-winning producer Diplo enlists pop collective Jonas Brothers for the incredibly short but pleasant pop/dance single, “Lonely.”

Diplo is no stranger to collaboration.  As a producer, that’s the name of the game, right? Right.  On his latest venture, he collaborates with one of the hottest renaissance acts of 2019, Jonas Brothers.  That’s right, many of us assumed the Jo Bros were done after 2009, with Nick Jonas embracing life as a solo artist, and Joe Jonas serving as the frontman of DNCE – hey, that “Cake by the Ocean” was definitely “f**king delicious.”  But, the brothers informed us, through song, that Happiness Begins.  Okay, okay – enough already! Basically, it comes down to the fact that Diplo & Jonas Brothers come together for the short but pleasant pop single, “Lonely.”

Diplo keeps things short on “Lonely,” which misses the two-and-a-half-minute mark.  That said, listening to “Lonely,” for what it is, it doesn’t sound as if it needed to last any longer.  Co-producing with King Henry, Ryan Tedder, and Jr. Blender, it’s safe to say this is your typical, sleek pop joint.  The sound is fine/good, but rather predictable, arguably one of the drawbacks of “Lonely.” In regard to singing, Nick and Joe Jonas are both successful, and that’s about the size of it.  As far as songwriting, this is a six-person effort: Henry Agincourt Allen, Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, Philip Meckseper, Ryan Tedder, and of course Diplo (Thomas Wesley Pentz).  But listening to the simplicity of the song, one wonders why there were six songwriters – just saying!

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Lonely” is respectable, but beyond that, it’s a ‘been there, done that’ sort of pop record. There’s nothing offensive about this cut whatsoever, but at the same time, where is the innovative spirit? Diplo is a producer who is known to experiment at times, and “Lonely” lacks that experimental side by all means.  It’s not bad, but it’s also no crowning achievement by any of the parties involved.
