Demi Lovato criticizes ‘45’ for his failed leadership on her somber yet powerful and totally relevant single, “Commander in Chief.”
Demi Lovato has made her presence known in 2020. She’s released some fabulous new singles, including the pained “Anyone”, the self-confident, empowering “I Love Me”, and the thoughtful and thankful, “Still Have Me”. That doesn’t even include her collaborative singles! Lovato is back once more, this time with a more somber song, 🎵 “Commander in Chief.”
“Commander in Chief” was written by an A-List team: Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Lovato, Eren Cannata and Finneas O’Connell. Cannata and FINNEAS handle the production work, which is somber and moody. It’s fitting given the subject matter of this particular record, where Demi criticizes President Donald Trump for his ineptness, lies, and selfishness, failed COVID-19 leadership, and racial injustice. Amazingly, given the somberness, “Commander in Chief” is set in a major key as opposed to minor. Regarding her messaging, Lovato “brings it on home” during the chorus, particularly the last few lines:
“We’re in a state of crisis, people are dyin’ While you line your pockets deep Commander in Chief, how does it feel too still Be able to breathe?”
As always, she sings beautifully. Worth noting is the restraint she shows here. Not nearly as dynamic as usual, by design, she still manages to pack a punch. One of the best parts beyond Demi herself are the supporting choral vocals, which highlight the titular lyric.
Final Thoughts
Demi Lovato is one of the best vocalists of our time, period. On “Commander in Chief” she continues to showcase brilliant vocals without the gospel histrionics and soaring high notes. It’s a contrast, but a fitting contrast that feels right given the sentiment and theme. Ultimately, another winner.
