3 out of 5 stars

David Guetta, Light My Body Up © ParlophoneDavid Guetta, assisted by Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, returns with a new sensual, energetic, dance single, “Light My Body Up.”

He’s back! Who? David Guetta, that’s who! Guetta enlists a little help from his hip-hop friends Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne on single, “Light My Body Up.” Unsurprisingly given its title, “Light My Body Up” is sexually driven.  The track isn’t a full-blown explicit joint, but clearly, sex is the M.O.

Analyzing “Light My Body Up,” the production work is sound through and through. David Guetta always excels with the boards, and this particular record is no different.  Considering he features two of urban music’s biggest stars, giving the production that tough-minded, hip-hop vibe was a great musical choice. Given the fact that the music is Guetta’s contribution, he nails it.

The rest of the focus lies on the performances and the songwriting itself.  Nicki Minaj only raps minimally here, with the focus being her singing.  Her singing is strong, with a seductive quality that suits the sensual lyrics.  As for her rapping, she only does so at the beginning.  The introductory rhymes don’t connect with the rest of the song – it’s mostly a rap by Nicki just to hear her rap.  She takes the time to shout out David Guetta, not to mention herself.

“Yes, b*tch, I’m me / Pretty N-I-C / You get it? Icy / But my name is spelled N-I-C.”

Examining the lyrics, “Light Up My Body” has its share of interesting moments.  On the first verse, Nicki doesn’t really hold back what he can do to her.  Sure, it’s not profane, but it’s not exactly PG, PG-13 either.

“You could love me, love me downtown / You got everything I want now / Let me fill your fantasies / And give you what you dream ‘bout.”

The pre-chorus and chorus confirm the fire, which is all sexual fire.  On the second verse, she “goes deeper”:

“I’ll leave you drowning in your wet dream / Swimming in that love / Surf it up in your wet dream / Baby, let me blow your cover.”

Nicki perfectly captures every pre-teen/teen guy’s rite of passage perfectly. Sigh.  Lil Wayne naturally plays off of energy established by Minaj.

“But keep it tight-tight, take this D, go night-night / Go so far downtown on you, I lose Wi-Fi…”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Light My Body Up” is enjoyable.  This isn’t the second coming, but David Guetta, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne have something going here.  Nothing transcendent here, just a good ole suggestive record.
