French DJ extraordinaire David Guetta enlists the more-popular-than-ever pop sensation Justin Bieber for his hot, summer single, “2U.”
It’s safe to say, Justin Bieber has been makin’ that paper in 2017. Bieber has appeared on two number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The first was the star-studded DJ Khaled hit, “I’m the One,” also featuring Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne. The second was Latin-pop hit, “Despacito,” courtesy of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. Now, with David Guetta at the helm, Bieber appears on a third surefire hit, “2U.”
From the jump, “2U” screams hit…figuratively speaking of course. The record begins abruptly, with Bieber setting the tone early on. More than “I’m the One” or “Despacito,” the pop star is allowed the opportunity to showcase the sheer beauty of his voice. That’s because “2U” highlights his vocal abilities overall – falsetto and various nuances. This is most apparent on the verses, where producers Giorgio Tuinfort and Guetta showcase incredible musicality given their restraint. Hence, Bieber delivers in a poetic approach:
“No limit in the sky / That I won’t fly for ya / No amount of tears in my eyes / That I won’t cry for ya, oh no…”
Okay, it’s sappy, but J.B. sells it like a champ.
On the chorus, Guetta lets loose more, incorporating a more hard-hitting sound. The punch feels right, given the poise of the verses. Bieber complements it superbly:
“When it comes to you / There’s no crime / Let’s take both of our souls / And intertwine / When it comes to you / Don’t be blind / Watch me speak from my heart / When it comes to you / Comes to you.”
The real pain arrives on the post-chorus/breakdown.
Final Thoughts
The rest of “2U” falls in much of the “same boat.” It’s predictable, but ultimately, good stuff. David Guetta knows how to stitch up a hit, while Justin Bieber has shown how gifted he truly is. Are there more talented artists than Bieber? Of course, but “hate him or love him,” the kid has a lot going for him and “2U” is just more proof of that.
