Dave Matthews Band, Come Tomorrow © RCADave Matthews Band returns after a six-year hiatus with a new LP, ‘Come Tomorrow.’ Reminiscent, spirited single “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” was issued in advance.

After nearly a six-year hiatus, Dave Matthews Band finally makes their return.  The jam-band last graced us with their presence in 2012 when Away from the Worldwas released.  Now, on June 8, 2018, their highly-anticipated, 14-track comeback LP Come Tomorrow arrives. DMB get off to a good start with opener and promo single “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” arriving weeks in advance.

“The day you came / Naked, afraid / Young mother screams and pushes you…” On “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin),” David Matthews literally wants everyone to remember how their lives began – the same as everybody else. Throughout the course of the song, he takes it back to simplistic beginnings including child birth itself, first steps, broken bones, laughter, and ultimately, joy. In many respects, “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” feels like Matthews is trying to unify, perhaps most evident on the chorus:

“Let’s not forget these early days

Remember we began the same

We lose our way in fear and pain

Oh joy begin.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” is an enjoyable, thoughtful comeback for Dave Matthews Band. As aforementioned, remembrance, togetherness, and unification are on Matthews’ mind.  No, he doesn’t get incredibly heavy or wordy, nor is this record the most profound of late, but he delivers a respectable, truly thoughtful statement.  Vocally, he sounds strong, while his cast is don’t do too shabby either.
