22-year old Spanish DJ/producer Danny Avila is back with a hot one! Avila enlists British boy band The Vamps, as well as Cleveland, Ohio rapper Machine Gun Kelly for his new single, “Too Good to Be True.” “Too Good to Be True” is set in a major key.  Despite being ‘happy’ in key, the beginning comes off a bit cloudy, as The Vamps utter the key lyric, “You’re way too good to be true.”

Nonetheless, exuberance is shown early-on musically, vocally, and lyrically. On the first verse, The Vamps (Bradley Simpson) sings, “The way that you move / You take me to heaven / The things you do / You got me confessin’.”) The best vocals occur on the energetic chorus.

“Oh, no baby don’t lie / When you say that you’ll be mine / I can’t look in your eyes / ‘Cause I fall a thousand times / And all I want is you to testify, ooh / Oh, so baby don’t lie / When you say you’ll be mine.”

Musically, Avila amps up the electronic dance music cues during this section – gimmicky, chopped vocals and bright, in-your-face synths.  The chorus is sandwiched in between pre-chorus and post-chorus sections which reiterate the titular lyric: “You’re way too good to be true.”  Moving beyond the chorus, Machine Gun Kelly provides contrast with his rap verse.  He serves up a mix of pop-rap and straight rhymes.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t say anything of note.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Danny Avila and The Vamps deliver an energetic dance/pop joint with “Too Good to Be True.” While Machine Gun Kelly doesn’t increase the profundity of the record, he does provide a solid contrast to  the record, which is a pro.
