Canadian R&B newcomer Daniel Caesar shows incredible potential on “We Find Love,” a single from his debut album, ‘Freudian.’
The time has come for R&B newcomer Daniel Caesar. What time? The time to release his debut album, Freudian. The title alone should draw attention to the 22-year old Canadian singer/songwriter. Canadian R&B has been hot as of late – see The Weeknd and Alessia Cara. Ahead of Freudian, Caesar issued three singles that made the album: early single “Get You” featuring Kali Uchis, “We Find Love,” and “Blessed.”
“We Find Love” shines like a beacon. The sound is soulful, with throwback vibes, starting with the opening piano accompaniment. This doesn’t sound like the 60s or 70s like retro-soul, but there are inescapable old-school cues. Also, the influence of gospel can’t be ignored – it’s there! Vocally, Caesar has a lovely tone. He gives just the right amount – he never under- nor over- sings. The best aspect of his vocal performance is his upper register. He doesn’t go crazy with the falsetto by any means, but what he does offer is lovely. Another pro – the backing choral vocals, which hail directly from the church.
Cons, cons, cons, where are you? This is a beautiful, thoughtfully penned song, so there’s nothing really objectionable. Nitpicking, “We Find Love” doesn’t sound like a hit. Maybe that sounds offensive, but it’s hard to envision much success for this fine gospel-oriented R&B song beyond the R&B charts. In an age where the success of R&B is limited, will Daniel Caesar be commercially successful?
Final Thoughts
All in all, “We Find Love” is a beautiful, soulful number that builds excitement for Freudian. The vocals are lovely, the production lovely – it’s well-conceived. No, Daniel Caesar has no single that’s a commercial juggernaut to fuel him, but the singles he’s released prove he’s a musician worth checking out.
