The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez! Throwback Vibez is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 207th edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on Lady performed by D’Angelo.

“You’re my lady / You’re my lady.”
In 2025, the music world lost one of its most talented and innovative musicians in D’Angelo (Michael Eugene Archer, 1974 – 2025).  Although D’Angelo only released three studio albums, all of them were critically acclaimed and showcased top-notch musicianship. “Lady” marked the biggest song of Archer’s career, giving him his only top-10 hit on the pop charts (it peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100). “Lady” is the ninth track on his 1995 platinum-certified debut album, Brown Sugar.  At nearly six minutes in duration, he takes his time on “Lady,” never hurrying things, and letting it ride out. It is sweet music to our ears. Archer wrote and produced the RIAA gold-certified song alongside Raphael Saadiq (b. 1966). Notably, “Lady” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 39th Annual Grammy Awards.

“Lady” features a fantastic sound palette, including keyboards, guitars, bass, and drum programming. The percussive groove is superb – to die for.  Likewise, the soulful instrumental riffs are the sugar, honey, iced tea – no cap! The musical accompaniment superbly helped usher in the neo (new) soul aesthetic and vibe in the mid-1990s. Beyond the epic accompaniment, D’Angelo delivered a stellar vocal performance with terrific vocal production to match. The tuneful chorus, which appears at the top of the track, is the crowning achievement – the crème de la crème!  The verses are a surefire vibe, too. “Don’t think I don’t see them lookin’ at ya / All of ‘em wishin’ they could have ya,” he sings in the first verse, and continues, “And as a matter of fact, uh / A bunch of them are itchin’ for you to scratch them.” In the second verse, D’Angelo sings, “Babe, I know they’ve seen us before,” but adds, “They don’t know that I’m your man.” The bridge does a bang-up job of distinguishing itself from the verses and the chorus while complementing those sections: “There’s no other lover for you or me.” The extended outro concludes the song sublimely, emphasizing the fact that she is his lady, in all of her divineness! Simply put, they don’t make R&B songs like “Lady” anymore.  Brilliant from start to finish, D’Angelo puts his foot into his performance, songwriting, and all facets of this ‘90s classic.
