DaBaby, "Masterpiece" [📷 : Interscope]DaBaby returns with his first single of 2021, “Masterpiece,” which is entertaining enough but fails to move the needle ultimately.

Prolific. 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper 🎙 DaBaby can certainly be described with that adjective. Bear in mind being prolific and profound are two separate things.  While he’s shined with gems like 🎵 “Suge” and 🎵 “Rockstar”, he’s also fallen short of the mark.  Perhaps his latest single, 🎵 “Masterpiece,” is indeed his ‘masterpiece.’ Perhaps, but I’d beg to differ giving it such lofty praise.  Read on friends, read on.

“Masterpiece” has plenty of things that work well or minimally, well enough.  It runs just over three minutes in duration, which is optimal length, especially for a DaBaby song (less is more).  It’s produced by 🎛 d.a. got that dope. Dope’s backdrop features simple but banging production comprised primarily of a looped synth line and trap drums.  Nothing profound but effective – enough to provide the artist with some fuel for the fire.  Focusing on our fearless MC, he delivers his usual cocky, confident, unapologetic flow.  Does he change anything up? Nope, not really.  You can debate that given his massive output in a short amount of time, it wouldn’t hurt if he did change things up though (at least I’d make that suggestion). His best moment arrives courtesy of the catchy, memorable and melodic chorus:

“My lil bitch is a masterpiece
I don’t even gotta be funny when I'm tellin’ no jokes
She still gon’ laugh at me
Still suck my dick when she mad at me
Let a nigga makе me mad, you’ll see
I nod my head in this bitch
Them niggas gon’ slidе on your bitch-ass for me
Buss down Cartier, new Master P.”

Final Thoughts 💭

With “Masterpiece,” DaBaby definitely entertains.  What he doesn’t do is move the needle.  Essentially, we get more of the same, which may be fine for a while, but eventually, he’ll need to ‘up the ante.’  This works but fails to wow.
