Bring on the controversy, won’t you? Controversial Tunes 😈🎶 is a column that provides background information and insight into songs that raised eyebrows and totally stirred the pot.  The records that grace Controversial Tunes are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  On the 10th edition of Controversial Tunes, we explore the controversy behind the song, 🎵 “Deepthroat” by 🎙 CupcakKe

Theme & Lyrics

“Hump me, fuck me
Daddy better make me choke
Hump me, fuck me
My tunnel loves to deep throat
Lick, lick, lick, lick (I lick it)
I want to eat yo dick (I do).”

OMG! Jesus! Believe it or not, CupcakKe started out as a church poet…  Wow – what exactly happened to the scripture? Anyways, with lyrics that specific and that explicit, the listener knows exactly what her intent is – there’s no grey area whatsoever.  Brutal honesty in music is ‘in’ these days, but even these excerpted lyrics from “Deepthroat” would make the freakiest of freaks take pause.  Sex is awesome but the rapper reveals a lot.

The thing about “Deepthroat” is that every aspect of the song is characterized by shock value.  There’s no break from the X-rated-ness whatsoever.  Deepthroat itself refers to fellatio (nice way to put it), and should you do a Google search, there are endless pornographic results… Furthermore, “Deepthroat” appears on the 2015 album titled 💿 Cum Cake.  Yikes!  So, to recap, we have a song named after a sex act that’s popular in porn, and it appears on an album whose title references male ejaculate.  Perfect.

Honestly, the excerpted lyrics are sufficient to support the controversial nature of “Deepthroat,” but there are ample examples of CupcakKe being naughty AF.  Exhibit B:

“Mouth wide open, mouth wide open
Mouth wide open like I was at the dentist
Mouth wide open, mouth wide open
Put it so deep, I can’t make a sentence.”

That basically explains the whole deepthroat thing… She pushes the envelope, adding even more absurd, over-sexed rhymes publicizing the bedroom which would be better served private. Exhibit C:

“My fingers in it, gentle
Explore this nigga mental...
My pussy pink just like salami
...Ballerina that dick when I spin
I fucked this nigga so good
I ain’t swallow one kid, I think I swallowed twins.”

So, we get some rough sex out of Exhibit C, with fitting swallowing… Woo!

Music Video 🎶📼

“Deepthroat” as a song is by far cupcakKe’s most explicit, though the rest of her catalog is filthy too.  That said, as risqué as the lyrics are, the music video, once available to watch on YouTube, is more controversial.  Honestly, it’s a NSFW video you must see to believe.  No, there’s no hardcore sex, but the things cupcakKe uses to represent the sexual imagery from her rhymes is nearly, if not as potent as actual sex itself.  The feeling when watching “Deepthroat” is another form of pornography.  It’s wild.

Final Thoughts 💭

Still years after “Deepthroat” came out – poor choice of words, I’m sorry – it still sends shockwaves.  Yes, music is at its most hyper-sexual in the 2020s, but “Deepthroat” still pushes sex to the excess.  Even the universal thing everybody loves can be overdone ‘publicly’ as cupcakKe does here.  I still ask myself how she was able to feature the video on YouTube for so long, where YouTube is quick to target other creators with less provocative material.  “Deepthroat” is polarizing, yet it is art that creates a discussion. It’s doing exactly what it’s intended to do.
