Craig David, The Time is Now © InsanityEnglish R&B artist Craig David enlists Bastille for “I Know,” a single from his upcoming studio album, ‘The Time is Now.’

When it comes to collaborations, some are more likely and others are less likely.  Pairing and English R&B artist and an English alternative band together seems unlikely.  However, that’s what happens with Craig David and Bastille join forces on “I Know You.” One thing’s for sure, as unlikely as the collaboration may be, David and Bastille frontman Dan Smith deliver capable vocalists. “I Know You” serves as a promo single for David’s 2018 album, The Time Is Now.

“I Know You” has plenty of pros. As aforementioned, the vocals are a selling point. Craig David takes the first verse, as well as the pre-chorus and bridge sections.  Bastille (Dan) joins him on the pre-chorus throughout, as well as the bridge.  Bastille handles the chorus, as well as the second verse.   While this is an urban-pop, contemporary pop song, Dan Smith fits right, infusing some of that signature melisma that blesses the band’s own material. The production is another selling point. This is soundly executed, implementing pop, R&B, and electronic cues.  There are pitch-shifted vocals, pummeling drums that grown in rhythm, and of course jam-packed build-ups.

Cons? “I Know You” won’t change your life.  It’s well-rounded and fun, but this is by no means a deep or transcendent record.  That can be established before even listening.  The title isn’t flashy, and reading into the lyrics, neither are they. Is that a glaring con? Honestly no – just nitpicking.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Craig David and Bastille make a good team.  “I Know You” is enjoyable and well-performed. As aforementioned, it won’t change your life or generate world peace, but it’s rock-solid, modern urban-pop. Winning.
