The unrequited love that pop singer/songwriter Conan Gray experiences in “Yours” is relatable, sweet, sweet music to our ears.
H
onestly, can we all agree thatFirst and foremost, Conan Gray sings angelically. His voice is stunning as he conveys ample emotion. “I know I’m not the one you really love, I guess that’s why I’ve never given up,” he sings in the first verse, continuing, “‘Cause I could give you all you want / The stars and the sun, but still, I’m not enough.” Clearly, “Yours” presents a strong, ultra-relatable case of unrequited love, which sucks something awful. We’ve all been there with Gray serving as our musical torchbearer. He wants this person to love him but it’s just not there: “The only thing that’s harder than sleepin’ alone / Is sleepin’ with your ghost.” Oh, man! Two of the strongest moments come by way of the chorus and the bridge. In the chorus, Gray confesses both reality and his feelings, asserting, “I want more, but I’m not yours / And I can’t change your mind.” The bridge, the final section we hear, finds Conan admitting his stupidity pursuing something that was clearly going nowhere: “Can’t believe I chose you / Over all my best friends / What the fuck did I do / In the end? / Just to not be yours.”
Final Thoughts
Conan Gray shines like a beacon on “Yours.” This isn’t an ornate pop single, but it’s one that exhibits artistry, musicianship, and connection with the listeners. You feel for Conan but also, you go back to the times you’ve tried to impress someone to no avail. Unrequited love stinks, but when it becomes a soundtrack, like it does here on “Yours,” well, it’s sweet music to the ears.
