Pop singer-songwriter Conan Gray ate and left no crumbs on “The Best,” a song that appears on the deluxe edition of his album, Wishbone.
“The Best” commences enigmatically, before settling into guitar-accompanied pop/rock. Conan Gray shines, delivering refined vocals. He sings calmly and tenderly. His falsetto sounds incredibly ripe. The lyrics are memorable and at times, quite poetic. “Arms in your sweatshirt, primrose at night,” Gray sings in the first verse, and continues, “Mint chocolate ice cream, your hazel eyes.” In the pre-chorus, he questions the validity of their relationship. This leads to the chorus, which is bigger than the verses. I love the rhythmic melody. The s-bomb that appears earns it the parental advisory, explicit lyrics label.
“Maybe it’s all in my mind
But swear if I saw you tonight
We could make peace with it, not have to sleep with it
Haunting me all of the time
I’d take back the shit that I said
When I was so pissed that you left
I could make peace with it, finally sleep with it
Finally, wish you the best.”
Gray brings things back down – more even keel – during the rhythmic second verse. He remembers their relationship and how vastly things have changed (“Nothing like it once was, when I was yours”). The bridge section is big, with Gray singing in his upper register, continuing to capture the emotional dynamics. All in all, “The Best” marks another enjoyable, well-rounded song from Conan Gray. It is well-written, well-performed, and well-produced; A great addition to Wishbone (deluxe).
