Conan Gray, Overdrive | Track Review 🎵

Pop standout Conan Gray absolutely slays on “Overdrive,” his first single of 2021. The record is a certified B-O-P.

Too many people slept on 🎙 Conan Gray in 2020.  By my estimations, he released one of the best albums of 2020 with his debut, 💿 Kid Krow.  If you were one of those who failed to acknowledge Gray, you definitely have another chance, specifically with his first single of 2021, 🎵 “Overdrive.”  Clearly on “Overdrive,” Gray is on-point – he absolutely kills it.

Starting with the sound, the production is L-I-T.  Gray works with a team comprised of pop’s elite producers: 🎛 The Monsters & Strangerz, 🎛 Chris Stracey, 🎛 Tobias Jesso Jr., and 🎛 German.  Awesome!  The record commences with an enigmatic introduction that’s certainly ear catching.  Beyond that intro, the sounds only grow more enticing, with a driving groove and ultimately, an epic chorus.

Of course, “Overdrive” isn’t merely all sound. As always, Conan Gray blesses us with his beautiful, youthful vocals – very expressive and sweet. Along with the production itself, Gray builds things up leading the chorus (verse and pre-chorus).  Even if all the cards aren’t revealed on the verse, Gray is unapologetic, with that IDGAF attitude.  Exhibit A: “Don’t give a fuck bout labels.” There it is! Of course, it’s the chorus that shines brightest:

“Burnin’ down the street, no left, right, left, right

I don’t wanna see no red light, red light
Fast lane on the beat, go ten, five, ten, five
You right next to me, feel the heat
Goin’ overdrive
Goin’ overdrive, yeah.”

Woo! That’s some lit love right there! Also, worth noting is the bridge, where Gray has some cool vocal effects going on.  This fits the futuristic vibes of this intriguing pop joint.

Final Thoughts 💭 

All in all, “Overdrive” screams hit, period.  I (We) already knew that Conan Gray was a bop, but “Overdrive” just might take him to that next level he so deserves.  Everything feels right about this record: strong vocals, catchy songwriting, and killer production.  Honestly, what more could you ask for from a pop song? It’s lit!
