3 out of 5 stars

Intellectual, thought-provoking MC Common returns with a new single, “Love Star.” The record features the talents of Marsha Ambrosius and PJ.   “Love Star” hails from Common’s upcoming album, A Bigger Picture Called Free (release date TBD).

“Love Star” opens with soulful, throwback vocals from Marsha Ambrosius:

“You’re my love star / what we gonna do, baby? / you’re my love star / what we gonna do, baby?”

A romantic track, it deserves some props for that. As romantic as it is, Common delivers one eyebrow raising lyric:

“God body language I be spittin’ while we f*ckin’.”

Ultimately, it seems uncharacteristic of the MC. “Love” turns out not to be the dynamic, intellectual comeback single one would expect from Common. It’s thoughtful to a degree, but imperfect.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Love Star” is respectable, but not necessarily elite.  Common has released songs that are notable, even if they haven’t been commercial breakthroughs.  This one is thoughtful considering its emphasis on romance, but it doesn’t feel as deep or as transcendent as others he’s dropped.  Arguably, it’s a bit too light for him.  Still, it’s worthy of spins.
