[3.5 stars]

Colbie Caillat remains consistent on the subtle, refined single, “Never Got Away.” “Never Got Away” serves as promo song from Caillat’s upcoming album.

The popularity of Colbie Caillat has waned significantly over the years.  It’s typical, but a total bummer.  The musician is “hot” at one point and then grows “ice cold” the next.  Caillat never compromised her artistry, something that clearly shows on latest single “Never Got Away.” “Never Got Away serves as a promo single for Caillat’s October 2016 LP, The Malibu Sessions.

“Never Got Away” is a nice, easy-going singer/songwriter pop track.  Caillat sings beautifully as always, never under- or over-singing. Soundly produced, there is ample space with nothing crammed in.  The M.O. of the record is definitely its subtlety.

The refrain is more expansive than the cool, calm, and collected verses.

“Oh, baby, say you’ll stay / cause I ain’t got anymore love left to waste / if you stay, maybe you could be the one that never got away”

The bridge is even more powerful but calms down briefly before the chorus picks up energy once more.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Never Got Away” is a well-rounded single. It’s cool, yet packs a punch. “Never Got Away” is soundly performed and exceptionally produced.
