Following a six-year hiatus, Australian pop singer-songwriter Cody Simpson makes an electrifying return with the exuberant “Baby Blue.”
“Baby Blue” is a vibe from the beginning. Set in a major key, the musical accompaniment and production are vibrant. The warm sounds accompanying our blonde pop artist include keys, guitar, horns, and pummeling drums that hit you in the chest. BOOM! The secret weapon, however, is not-so-secret: Mr. Cody Simpson, ladies and gentlemen! Simpson sounds far more commanding and mature than the teen-pop singer from his “iYiYi” days. His vocals are fresh, ripe, and youthful at 29 years old. He sings with incredible exuberance, bringing the tuneful melodies and memorable lyrics to life like a champ. In the first verse, he acknowledges how special she is: “I said, ‘Come on with me, baby, ‘cause you might be the one.’” Her name, for the intents and purposes of the song, is Baby Blue. In the chorus, the crème de la crème, he characterizes her as “The Bobby to your Whitney,” and encourages her to “Keep on dancing with me.” Simpson keeps things romantic in the second verse, asserting, “Juliet, you stepped into my summer night’s dream,” and is surprised that “you were a disco queen.” On the bridge, Simpson informs her, “You’re the chance I would take.” Aww! All in all, Cody Simpson makes a fabulous return to music with “Baby Blue”. His voice sounds great, while this song feels perfectly suited to him.
