Clairo makes a compelling return with โBlouse,โ a single where she seeks a deeper, emotional connection as opposed to merely physical.
S
heโs back! Alternative pop artistClairo is searching for a deeper connection, yet she feels like everything is centered on a physical relationship and admiration for her body. โItโs funny now Iโm just useless and a whore,โ she sings on the second verse, continuing, โBut I get a cosign from your favorite one-man show.โ Worth noting, one Genius annotator connects this reference to the Joni Mitchell classic,
โFor Freeโ โ I can see it! The bigger point is, sheโs seeking an emotional connection, confirming this on the chorus as she sings, โIf touch could make them hear, then touch me.โ Thatโs brilliant for sure. There are plenty of brilliant things regarding โBlouse,โ including the intimate nature of the performance, the songwriting, and the gorgeous production (
Jack Antonoff co-produces with her).
Final Thoughts
All in all, โBlouseโ is a beautiful return for Clairo. She sings very well, giving an emotional performance sans histrionics โ theyโre not necessary! The songwriting, handled solely by the artist, is thoughtful and relatable. The production, alongside Jack Antonoff, yields ear catching results, beginning more simpler and then adding strings and winds. Honestly, thereโs little if anything to criticize. Iโm excited to see what album number two, Sling (July 16, 2021) brings for Claire Cottrill.
