Clairo, Immunity [Photo Credit: FADER]Rising alternative singer/songwriter Clairo delivers a compelling record with “Bags,” the promo single for her highly-anticipated debut album, ‘Immunity.’

“I’m not the type to run / I know that we’re having fun / But what’s the rush? Kissing, then my cheeks are so flushed.” Uh-oh – matters of the heart are firmly in play! Furthermore, it is officially Clairo (Claire Cottrill) season! The rising alternative musician officially announced the arrival of her debut album, Immunity (August 2, 2019).  She’s famous for one particular viral song, “Pretty Girl”.  My first encounter with the 20-year old musician was a guest appearance on the Wallows’ single, “Are You Bored Yet?” (Nothing Happens).  Once an artist reaches my radar, it usually piques my interest regarding their future endeavors. Hence, here we are, on The Musical Hype with a review of “Bags,” the debut single from Immunity.

“Bags” has promise written all over it – it is a great way to foreshadow Immunity.  Clairo gives us nearly four-and-a-half-minutes’ worth of song, bucking the trend of briefer records some artists opt for.  Helping her make this fully-developed number thrive is co-production by Rostam Batmanglij (formerly of Vampire Weekend fame) and Nick Breton.  The sound of “Bags” is quite alluring, featuring an awesome drum groove, driving bass and guitars, as well as some accentuating keyboard work.  It definitely fuels Cottrill’s fire as she sings marvelously over the rhythmic backdrop, while maintaining an appealing chill and poise.

The sound of “Bags” is a huge proponent of the record’s success.  The songwriting by Clairo is also another notable proponent.  As aforementioned, Cottrill dabbles in matters of the heart, and all is not well in regard to the relationship. On the bridge, she sings, “Pardon my emotions / I should probably keep it all to myself / Know you’d make fun of me.” In other words, she’s holding back and willing to accept the status quo.  The bridge is pretty sick, but it is the chorus that makes “Bags” the ‘cat’s meow’:

“Can you see me? I’m waiting for the right time

I can’t read you, but if you want, the pleasure’s all mine

Can you see me using everything to hold back?

I guess this could be worse

Walking out the door with your bags…”

Final Thoughts

So, how good is this Clairo debut single? “Bags” is pretty awesome. What makes it so good? Strong production, songwriting, and a compelling vocal performance. Great introduction for many to an intriguing musician.
