Ciara definitely ‘levels up’ on her slick new hip-hop infused single, “Level Up.” But, what will the impact of this ascent be on her commercial fortunes?
“Five, four, three, two, one / Leggo! (watch me) / Level up, level up, level up, level up, level up.” Honestly, Ciara needs to “Level Up,” just as she asserts she going to on her entertaining new single. It’s been ‘tough sledding’ for the urban-pop, urban contemporary singer, who hasn’t been album to regain the success of her 00s albums (Goodies or The Evolution). She’s had a couple of hits since then, such as “Love Sex Magic”, “Ride”, and “Body Party,” but nothing has propelled her to multiplatinum heights. “Level Up” is a good look for C, regardless what the numbers end up looking like for the single.
Following the countdown, Ciara “levels up” with the hip-hop infused chorus. Throughout the course of the record, she mixes chanting and singing – she’s multifaceted. In regards to her overall performance, she’s chocked-full of swagger, showcasing ‘that attitude’ if you catch my drift. On the pre-chorus, the vocal harmonies, while later on the bridge, the contrast brings on lusher vocals and sounds overall. While it should go without saying, the production work is slick, with the beat and synths standing out. Adding to the edginess of this joint, it’s set in a minor key.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Ciara makes a solid comeback with “Level Up.” She’s definitely on with her updated Janet Jackson vibes. The question is, will this well-rounded record translate into a hit for her this time? Honestly, dunno. She’s the total package, but with more dance-oriented urban contemporary music, it’s simply very difficult to connect to. There’s still a market, but artists in that market haven’t performed particularly well as of late, including Janet Jackson herself. Still, Ciara definitely deserves credit for “Level Up,” whether she gets any or not.
